As the team started to finish up the Fall season, the erg sitings became more and more regular. The girls knew what was coming up…
ERG SEASON.
This is every rower’s nightmare. The time when you cannot get on the water to practice but instead have to sit down for the two hours of practice every morning at 5 AM and stare at a screen of numbers that dictates whether you are pulling hard enough or not.
As the fall season quickly came to an end, we got our winter training plans. We are expected to row many, many meters over this break. As everyones anxiety built about the hours they will be spending on the erg our prestigious boatman, Ray, told us about KEVIN PROCTOR. He said when he rowed at the Naval Academy, they had a very successful fall season and were then coming to the break that we are now coming to as well. They were all told to train hard and they wanted to in order to do even better for sprint season. They all came back from break ready to blow other boats out of the water… except KEVIN PROCTOR. When Kevin came back he gained weight and did not work out to the same extent as the other guys. He ended up getting kicked out of the top boat and then when the first race came up they did not do as well. Eventually, during the season Kevin got back to his normal physique and was moved back into the first varsity boat. With this line up back to normal they went on to win a championship. Our boatman told us this story so that we would all stay on our grind that we had this season. We don’t want to have to take the sprint season to work back up again and then maybe only win one race. We have to keep building from where we are.
So as a lesson to all, when you work hard for something and achieve it, don’t fall, but continue to rise and achieve more than you thought you could before.
